THIS ONE IS A BLAST!

OK, so it’s still 42 degrees at 6 a.m. on April 6th, but at least the 7 feet of snow is gone!
It’s been a long time, and a pretty rough Winter. I nursed and lost a dear friend at far too young an age, moved 3 times for crazy house defect reasons, totaled my car on black ice in a ballet on Elm Street that made me famous on the 10 pm news and took out half the street (but thank God not a single human being – except me, but I just got a free ride to the ER on a backboard with some good looking paramedics).
Not an advertisement, I get no commissions, but that Subaru Outback saved my life and was immediately replaced with a new Subaru – I didn’t even bother looking at any other cars.
So I checked out for a while – to recover, regroup and relax (oh yeah, I forgot – move a few times). But I saw that was the real beauty of working for myself from home.
Who was I going to call in to and ask for a day off because I’d just had a big car accident and didn’t feel to great? Me? Well, I didn’t have to call but I sure said yes, with no consequences, lost sick days or pay cuts!

I’ve talked to so many Baby Boomers who desperately want a chance to get started and some cannot afford it.  This is my small way of helping at least two people and giving back to an industry that has given me so much.

Baby Boomers are being lied to by the same financial companies that lost a good portion of their retirement in the collapsing economy.  I’m boiling mad at this, because the effect it could have as our generation ages could be devastating if one believes what their studies show.  These studies (conducted by the financial companies themselves), attempting to make the outlook brighter than we’ve seen it are, I believe, an effort both to absolve themselves (for losing people’s money and then being handsomely rewarded by government bailouts) and to encourage the investor to keep their money with the companies instead of smelling the coffee and finding another way.

As I said in a previous post, the largest growing segment in the homeless population is the Baby Boomer generation.  Not that there are not others, including families with children who are suffering the same fate, but unless the Baby Boomer generation stops watching American Idol and really looks honestly at the future – we are in trouble.  Big trouble.

When you read between the lines and calculate the numbers put forth by these studies, you find that  Boomers (hundreds of millions of Boomers) are going to have to work well past the age or retirement, just to survive.  They are going to need to produce income well into their older years.  Can you imagine getting up and on the road every day at 72 (if you could find a job)?  Is that what you really want.  My video below explains the situation:

You deserve a better retirement/older years than what you may get.  Sure, there are plenty of Baby Boomers who are “all set” financially, regardless of what may happen.  But I’m concerned that the big financial companies are putting out numbers that make Baby Boomer retirement look rosey.  But there is HOPE is we recognize it – and it lies within.  Baby Boomers are known for their ingenuity, and it’s time we read through the pretty picture and get down to reality.

Baby Boomers are the largest number of individuals starting their own home-based businesses, far surpassing any other group.  That doesn’t surprise me.  The aware Boomer has taken off the clouded lenses, looked squarely at his situation and determined that the way out of our individual and collective potential misfortune is entrepreneurship.

Never give up, never quit – but ignore the warning sgns

This day must never be forgotten.  The stories must be told and retold.   We must not leave our children thinking this was just a small part of history in a distant time.

We were visciously attacked, badly injured but we showed the absolute true colors of what it means, really means to be an American.  Most of us flew the flag from one end of the continent to the other.  Stores could not keep them in enough supply to fill the needs.  Neighbors talked to and loved neighbors they’d never greeted before.

And heroes, ordinary men and women, on a split second’s notice did extraordinary things to save their fellow man – often losing their own life in the process.  We KNEW what it mean to be an American.  The heroes on Flight 93, knowing they were going to their own deaths, stopped an assault on Washington, D.C. that could have destroyed the White House or Capitol Hill.  ”Let’s roll” should remain forever in our minds.

Tell the stories, teach your children, pray for those we lost, pray for those who survived, and love the country that gives you the greatest chance of personal freedom and self-determination than any other civilization in history.  Put aside our differences, let’s hold hands today – saddened by the loss but emboldened by the bravery.

I was sad to read a multitude of articles about the growth of homelessness among Baby Boomers. a problem with no end in sight.

In cities like Miami, Dallas, and others, the greatest increase in homelessness has become members of the Boomer generation, people who had careers, homes, families, insurance – all of the things we take for granted, who found themselves “downsized” and after spending years looking for a job, could no longer afford even the smallest amount of rent, let alone to continue to own their own homes.  Literally, out on the streets.

The old economy doesn’t exist, the government is not going to save them, their families can’t or won’t help them, and many members of the unstoppable generation have simply given up.  This is disastrous for society, and heartbreaking to observe – watching the death of the human spirit, the total loss of hope, and the growing despair among a generation that created and gave so much to the development of society, technology, thought, and excitement to their world over the years.

The world the Boomer generation expected to exist as they trundled into their older years no longer exists.   Perhaps it’s the human normal reaction of denial in the face of trauma that has led people to this level of despair and giving up.  For some, perhaps circumstances really left some no other choice – they are not to blame.

But if we’ve learned anything from history, life is about change.  If you asked someone in the first century A.D. how long they thought the Roman Empire would last before it collapsed – they would have laughed at you.  The Roman Empire collapse?  That was beyond comprehension.  It lasted 1,000 years; no one would have believed it could end – it controlled the world.

But POOF – it was gone.  Just as the Baby Boomers expectations of how their older years would pan out.  The old economy is dead and Baby Boomers are beginning to learn it.  Denial, that life preserving force that is meant to protect the psyche just long enough until it can deal with the tragedy, is hopefully chipping away.  The way out is not simply re-doing what no longer works, something drastically different needs to happen to change the outcome of the Baby Boomers older years.  Maybe it is not what they expected, but it does not necessarily have to mean homelessness or poverty – it can be light years better than we ever dreamed.  Isn’t that so often the case?  God chuckles as we make plans, because He knows He has so much more planned for us.  IF we are willing to dump the denial and move on.  Cut all the ties and learn to cast aside almost everything we once believed was true.  If we are willing to become a first century Roman, who knows that the empire will not last forever.

What does this have to do with the growth of homelessness among Baby Boomers?  For some – nothing, their plans will move forward as they anticipated long ago.  But for the huge number of Boomers whose lives have not turned out as they thought they would – either through economic collapse, divorce, chronic illness, downsizing, loss of interest in their careers and wanting to do something different – whatever – it can mean the difference between a secure, fulfilled and (yes) exciting.

Yes, it takes faith, courage, determination, and a total change of mindset to reinvent yourself at 55.  People start over every day, but maybe it seems like it would be easier at a younger age.  But maybe not.  With all the years of experience, learning and discipline behind you, a Baby Boomer often has a better chance at reinventing their lives than someone 30 years younger.

If your economic situation or your dreams leave you sleepless, what choice is there?  To remain in denial (head in sand) or to change – with a commitment and  passion.  You know the old adage:  go to school, get a job, work hard, climb the ladder and collect your pension did not and does not work or was killing you.  Change seems frightening – but it is really a boogeyman hiding under the bed.

Once your mindset changes, you can and will do everything in your power to change your life and your income.  You will not give up until the the final whistle blows.  You have access to the power to undo years of subconscious “I Can’t” chatter and turn it around into a “Can Do” attitude.  Once you change your mind, you can change your circumstances, your life and your income.

Beware of sharks, however.  They swim in whatever waters are available to them at the time, looking for desperate fish to devour.  Run to the Internet in search of an instant answer to your problems, and you may find yourself worse off than before.

The “gurus” are out there, ready to take your last time, promising the world and delivering hot air.  Yes, there is more money to be made on the Internet than ever before but the only way to do it is to align yourself with people you get to know and trust.  Throw away the allure of the glitz and automatic systems and realize that this, too, is work.  And realize that there are communities of people out there who are not only full of integrity and honesty, but who genuinely want to know you and help you.

It is the era of the relationship economy, it does not happen overnight but so long as you do not quit it does happen.  You do not need to be an expert at any of the details to start – but if you don’t start your head is still in the sand thinking the Roman Empire will last forever.

But there is HOPE beyond what your circumstances may now lead you to believe.  Baby Boomers need to help other Baby Boomers prevent despair, economic ruin and homelessness and together WE CAN and WILL do it!

In a way, it made me chuckle.  ”They” didn’t think we’d come, let alone almost overrun the place.

Just another example of the mistakes other generations make about the Baby Boomers.  We are unlike any other generation this planet has seen.  Aside from our sheer numbers (about 77 million), something about us has been different since Mr. Gerber got the brilliant (and very profitable for him) inspiration that it might be a good idea to figure out how to make feeding these millions of infants a little more convenient for their parents.

Small and home-based businesses cannot afford to overlook the power of the Internet and social media, and marketing experts have to drop their almost Biblical devotion to the adage that their primary target market is the 19 to 34 year olds.  Study after study shows the driving force in the economy has been and remains the generation born between 1946 and 1964.  The Baby Boomers have driven every economic trend since our births, and we continue to do so.  We have the greatest spending power, the greatest influence and we are the New Entrepreneurs (even if our hair is thinning out or turning gray).

The overwhelming majority of new small businesses started in the United States are created by folks aged 54 to 65.  And, in addition to brick and mortar – where are we?  On the Internet – and not just watching the news.

This is wonderful news for the Baby Boomer Entrepreneur – the people you want to meet, forge relationships with, and market to are online on social media where you can reach them and they can find you.  At the whopping cost of $0.  Whether you’re 19 or 85, if you are an entrepreneur you cannot afford to ignore this:  done properly, you can reach your market, millions of people.

I say “done properly” because the social media is flooded with desperate spammers begging people to buy and join – and they only end up irritating (mild choice of word) their listeners.

This new world of social media and online presence is all about building relationships – real relationships where you put the needs of the other first.  Offer quality content, help and a genuine chance to get to know you and then you might end up with a customer or business partner.  Offer yourself first, without expectation of return………no one gives a hoot what your comp plan is or what ingredients are in your products until they KNOW you.

This might be a digital age, but you cannot hide behind a computer – you are putting yourself out there.

As a Baby Boomer (and I’ve said this so many times), I simply love it.  Precisely because of those relationships and not solely because I am an online entrepreneur.  When we grow up (gasp, what a thought!) and no longer have the mobility to race around as we do now, we can continue to maintain those relationships daily.  The people we meet online today will be old friends 20 years from now, and who knows how far technology will have advanced.  Already, I can video call friends for free all over the world – meet their spouses, their dogs, get a tour of their house.  If the day finally does come when I can no longer “get up and go” – I can still “sit down and go” so long as I have a computer and an Internet connection.  It changes the entire picture of growing old – no dreary dreams of wasting away alone in a small apartment…….I can “visit” my friends from Moscow to Australia and never leave the couch.

And, if I want to, I can still be in business.

I took time off – really off.  No Internet, no conferences, just time “down the shore” as we say in Philly (where I was raised).  Family, reflection, prayer, reading, swimming and pondering.  Up before dawn, floating in the pool under the stars, real talks with family and old friends.  I guess you’d say a retreat of sorts.

In a few more days, I’ll return home – looking forward to returning to “work” (because it isn’t work).  I have an Internet connection for a few hours today, so I hopped aboard to see what was going on out there in the jungle.

Ho-hum.  Same old, same old for many.  Sadly.

And, the clock is ticking.

Oh, I’m not a fatalist.  Just because I’m a Baby Boomer doesn’t mean I’m picking out my coffin – almost makes me laugh.  Not that I’m making a personal comparison, but the late Pope John Paul II didn’t begin his greatest life’s work until he was 58.  And, if I’m correct, I don’t think Colonel Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken until he was about 66.

But if you get to be my age (55), and don’t see how time is passing, and haven’t learned from the years of experiencing utter joy and extreme grief – I wonder what planet you’ve been on.

And we are all blessed with the same thing everyday – we all get 24 hours.  It’s the great equalizer and our choice of what to do with them.  We can pass up moments of family and friends like I’ve been experiencing this week (then rush to their funerals after not having seen them for five years), or

We can DO LIFE NOW!

We choose how to spend those 24 hours we all get and I realized, especially when I peeked into the jungle a little while ago,

just how happy and blessed I am,

excited,

making plans,

free to do it,

earning money,

not hypnotized into thinking I HAVE to live my life a certain way.  I don’t.  And, I do not.

Do you know, honestly KNOW, the freedom and relief of the feeling on Sunday nights when you forget that it is Sunday night and even if you remember, you don’t really care because Monday is just another wonderful day?  I DO.

To have found a career mission, a passion, a purpose – to lead others to that same exquisite freedom?

That’s what I have, that’s what I found and the best part of it is the thank yous I hear from people who have followed me and found that same freedom.  Such a letter makes me cry.  Oh, not because I’m any big-shot guru, but because I loved and I gave myself to someone else.  Don’t miss that experience.

So when I checked in on the jungle today,

I saw it hadn’t changed.  The “guru” money robbers are still out there pulling cash from the wallets of desperate people,

selling them this week’s snake oil,

and their “sheeple” are desperately trying to “market” it to me and others,

hoping against hope that they finally found it, until three weeks later they find another launch by another “guru” and once again open their wallets,

until they are broke, disheartened and quit.

Or, join another “rah rah” MLM, with no way of succeeding in it…………

BUT I BRING GREAT NEWS – and this is my mission to share (and especially with my Baby Booomer Budddies, so many so desperate),
